Kerala Launches Balyaspandanam Scheme for Anganwadi Children

Thiruvananthapuram: The Keralam government has launched the ‘Balyaspandanam’ scheme to improve the health and nutritional status of children attending Anganwadi centres across the state. Implemented by the Department of Women and Child Development, the three-month initiative focuses on identifying nutritional deficiencies and health-related problems among children and ensuring appropriate treatment and care wherever required. The government has set the goal of the initiative as “Healthy Childhood Strong Future.”

Under the scheme, the health and nutritional status of children attending Anganwadis will be systematically assessed. The objective is not only to collect information about their current health condition but also to take timely action based on problems identified during the screening process. Coordination between the Health Department and the Department of Women and Child Development has been emphasised for effective implementation.

Comprehensive Health Screening for Children

Under the Balyaspandanam scheme, children at Anganwadi centres will undergo screening that includes measurements of height, weight, other body parameters and nutritional status. Health workers from nearby primary health centres will assist in the process, helping ensure that the children’s health is assessed in a systematic manner.

The government has set a target of completing the first phase of health screening by September 20. The data collected during the screening will be compiled and analysed. Based on the findings, further action will be planned according to the individual health and nutritional needs of the children.

Treatment and Additional Care for Children in Need

If the screening identifies health or nutritional problems requiring special attention, the scheme will facilitate further treatment and necessary care for the affected children. One of the key objectives of the initiative is to detect health problems at an early stage so that appropriate intervention can be provided without delay.

The information collected during the screening will also help assess children’s nutritional requirements. If a child is found to require additional nutritional support, necessary changes will be made to their dietary arrangements. This approach aims to make the scheme more than just a health-screening programme by linking it with the overall nutritional well-being of children.

Children at 33,120 Anganwadi Centres to Benefit

According to the Keralam government, children attending 33,120 Anganwadi centres across the state will benefit from the Balyaspandanam scheme. A total of 258 Child Development Project Officers (CDPOs) have been given necessary instructions for coordination and monitoring of the initiative.

The government has placed particular emphasis on the health and nutritional needs of children living in tribal and disadvantaged areas. Concerns over malnutrition and other health-related issues among children in these communities have led to the inclusion of Balyaspandanam in the state government’s 100-day action plan.

Focus on Protecting Children’s Personal Information

The scheme will involve the collection of important health-related information about children. Therefore, the government has also stressed the importance of protecting children’s privacy and personal information while using and analysing the collected data.

The data obtained through the screening process will be analysed to better understand the actual health and nutritional requirements of children. Based on the findings, steps will be taken to provide appropriate treatment, care and nutritional support to children who need it.

The government believes that identifying health and nutritional problems during childhood can help strengthen the foundation for children’s healthy growth and development. The Balyaspandanam scheme is being implemented in Anganwadi centres across Keralam with this objective of promoting healthier childhoods and supporting the overall development of children.
