Kerala Power Crisis: KSEB Warns of Power Restrictions as Electricity Shortage Deepens

Kerala Power Crisis

Kerala may face further power restrictions as the state grapples with a shortage of electricity during peak-demand hours, with the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) warning consumers about possible interruptions.

The warning comes amid growing pressure on the state’s power supply system, with demand rising while adequate electricity remains unavailable through the national power exchange. Recent reports indicate that Kerala has been facing a peak-time shortage of around 600–700 MW. (Kerala Kaumudi)

KSEB Warns of Possible Power Cuts

KSEB has cautioned that parts of Kerala could experience temporary power interruptions if the electricity shortage persists. The restrictions are expected to be concentrated during peak evening hours, when electricity consumption typically rises sharply.

According to recent KSEB warnings, power restrictions could last around 15 to 30 minutes, particularly between 7 pm and midnight. Several areas had already experienced similar interruptions amid the ongoing supply crunch. (Kerala Kaumudi)

The electricity board has attributed the situation to a combination of factors, including the limited availability of electricity from the power exchange, reduced rainfall and declining generation from various sources.

Kerala Faces 600–700 MW Peak Shortage

The state’s electricity demand has increased as temperatures remain high and rainfall has declined. This has placed additional pressure on the power grid, particularly during evening peak hours.

KSEB has also pointed to restrictions imposed at the national grid level. The Grid Controller of India has directed states not to draw electricity beyond their allotted share and to implement load shedding when necessary. (Kerala Kaumudi)

The shortage is not limited to Kerala. Demand for additional electricity across South India has also increased, with the combined requirement estimated at around 1.5 GW.

Reduced Rainfall Adds to Kerala’s Power Problems

Reduced rainfall has emerged as another major concern for Kerala’s electricity sector. Lower rainfall can affect hydropower generation, an important component of the state’s electricity supply.

Earlier power shortages had already highlighted the pressure on Kerala’s generation capacity. In July, KSEB warned that an additional 300 MW would be required to meet demand and said power restrictions could become necessary if sufficient electricity could not be purchased from the power exchange. KSEB’s official website also provides consumers with a Know Your Outage facility to check power interruption information. (KSEB)

What Consumers Should Expect

Consumers in Kerala should be prepared for possible short-duration interruptions during peak hours if the supply shortage continues. The exact areas and duration of interruptions can vary depending on the availability of electricity and grid conditions.

For consumers, the immediate concern is whether the shortage will persist long enough to trigger wider restrictions. KSEB’s response will depend largely on its ability to secure additional electricity from external sources and the availability of power through the national grid.
