US Open 2026: Ben Shelton Reaches Maiden Grand Slam Final After Beating Frances Tiafoe

US Open 2026

Ben Shelton could end America’s 23-year men’s Grand Slam drought after beating Frances Tiafoe to reach the US Open 2026 final against Alexander Zverev.

New York: Ben Shelton has moved one step closer to ending America’s long wait for a men’s Grand Slam champion after defeating fellow American Frances Tiafoe in the US Open 2026 semifinal. The 23-year-old secured a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 victory at Arthur Ashe Stadium to reach his first Grand Slam final.

Shelton will now face top-seeded German Alexander Zverev in the championship match on Sunday, September 13. The final gives the young American a chance to win his maiden Grand Slam title and become the first American men’s singles Grand Slam champion since Andy Roddick in 2003.

The semifinal was also notable for being an all-American men’s singles clash at the US Open. Shelton had to recover from a slow start after dropping the opening set, but he gradually took control with his powerful serve, aggressive baseline play and composure during key points.

Tiafoe Wins Opening Set as Shelton Struggles Early

Tiafoe made the stronger start at Arthur Ashe Stadium and quickly put Shelton under pressure. The 28-year-old American capitalised on errors from his opponent to take the first set 6-4.

With Tiafoe leading, Shelton needed to find a way to change the momentum. He responded by becoming more aggressive with his serve and groundstrokes.

The adjustment worked in the second set. Shelton reduced Tiafoe’s opportunities and played with greater control to win 6-3 and bring the match level.

He carried that momentum into the third set as well. Tiafoe struggled to regain the authority he had shown early in the contest, while Shelton continued to attack from the baseline and eventually took another 6-3 set.

Shelton Holds His Nerve to Close Out the Match

The fourth set became a test of Tiafoe’s ability to force a deciding set and Shelton’s ability to finish the contest.

Tiafoe continued to fight and created pressure as he looked to extend the semifinal. Shelton, however, stayed composed during the crucial stages and refused to allow the match to slip away.

A costly double fault from Tiafoe during the decisive phase gave Shelton an important opening. The 23-year-old took advantage of the opportunity and completed a 7-5 fourth-set victory.

With the win secured, Shelton celebrated with his team before sharing an emotional moment with Tiafoe at the net.

Can Shelton End America’s 23-Year Grand Slam Wait?

Shelton’s victory has put him within one match of a major milestone for American men’s tennis.

Andy Roddick was the last American man to win a Grand Slam singles title when he lifted the US Open trophy in 2003. Shelton now has the opportunity to end the 23-year wait if he defeats Zverev in the final.

A victory on Sunday would also make Shelton the first American male player since Roddick to win a men’s singles Grand Slam title.

His run carries additional historical significance. Shelton is the first Black American male player since Arthur Ashe in 1972 to reach the US Open men’s singles final.

At the Grand Slam level, MaliVai Washington was the last Black American man to reach a men’s singles final, doing so at Wimbledon in 1996.

Victory Over Alcaraz Boosted Shelton’s US Open Run

Shelton’s journey to the final has included some major victories. Before facing Tiafoe, he had already beaten several experienced opponents, including Hubert Hurkacz, Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

His biggest win came in the quarterfinal when he defeated defending champion and two-time US Open winner Carlos Alcaraz in a demanding five-set battle.

That match finished early Wednesday morning, leaving Shelton only two days to recover and prepare for his semifinal against Tiafoe.

The victory over Alcaraz further strengthened Shelton’s confidence. The American had already enjoyed a successful 2026 season, winning the Montreal title and collecting his fourth ATP Tour title of the year.

Tiafoe Falls Short After Another Strong US Open Campaign

Although Tiafoe could not reach the final, his performance at the 2026 US Open marked another impressive run at the tournament.

The 28-year-old reached the US Open semifinals for the third time in his career. He had previously made the last four in 2022 and 2024.

His latest semifinal appearance also saw him equal Andre Agassi’s record for the most US Open men’s singles semifinal appearances by an American player in the 21st century.

Tiafoe had produced a remarkable comeback in his quarterfinal against Alex Michelsen. After falling two sets behind and facing further trouble in the deciding set, he fought back to win and book his place in the semifinals.

Despite the loss to Shelton, his 2026 US Open campaign remains one of the highlights of his season. Reports indicate that the run is expected to take him to a new career-high ranking of world No. 8.

US Open Semifinal Held on 9/11 Anniversary

The Shelton-Tiafoe semifinal also took place on an emotional day for the United States.

September 11 marked the 25th anniversary of the terrorist attacks in the country. The significance of the date was felt around New York as the US Open continued at Flushing Meadows.

After his victory, Shelton referred to the occasion during his emotional post-match remarks and also remembered his late grandmother.

The combination of the all-American semifinal, the significance of the date and Shelton’s historic achievement made the night particularly emotional for the home crowd.

Shelton Faces Tough Test Against Alexander Zverev

Shelton’s final hurdle will be Alexander Zverev, who booked his place in the championship match by defeating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6(7), 7-6(6).

The German top seed will now play his second US Open final. He also enters the contest with considerable Grand Slam experience after winning the French Open title in 2026 and reaching the Wimbledon final earlier this season.

For Shelton, the challenge is even greater because his head-to-head record against Zverev has not gone in his favour.

The two players have met five times so far, with Shelton losing all five encounters. Their US Open final will therefore give the American a chance not only to win his first Grand Slam title but also to register his first victory over Zverev.

One Match Away From a Historic Achievement

Shelton’s progress to the US Open 2026 final has already become a major moment for American tennis.

At 23, he has reached his first Grand Slam final after navigating a difficult draw and defeating some of the biggest names in the tournament, including Alcaraz and Tiafoe.

Now, everything comes down to the final against Zverev on Sunday, September 13.

A victory would give Shelton the biggest title of his career and end America’s 23-year wait for a men’s Grand Slam champion. A defeat would still leave him as the US Open runner-up after the best Grand Slam run of his career.

For American tennis fans, however, Shelton’s semifinal victory has already delivered a major breakthrough. The country once again has a men’s singles player within one victory of a Grand Slam championship.
