ED’s ‘South Action’: Searches Across 4 States, Drug Money-Laundering Network Under Scanner

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has launched a major search operation across South India as part of money-laundering investigations linked to alleged narcotics trafficking.

ED teams are conducting searches at around 30 premises across Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Telangana. The simultaneous operation covers eight separate cases being investigated under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002.

The cases involve alleged trafficking of narcotic substances including methamphetamine, ganja, hashish oil and MDMA. The searches are being carried out under Section 17 of the PMLA.

Tracing the Money Behind the Drug Trade

The ED’s investigation is not limited to establishing alleged drug trafficking. A key focus is tracing the money trail linked to the suspected proceeds of crime.

Investigators are looking into how money allegedly generated through the drug trade was received, transferred or invested, including possible use of bank accounts, hawala channels, properties and other assets.

The operation is also being carried out under the broader Nasha Mukt Bharat campaign, which aims to strengthen the country’s efforts against drug abuse and trafficking.

Since the searches are still underway, the complete picture of what has been recovered or what further action may follow is yet to emerge.

The larger message from the operation is clear: the investigation is moving beyond the alleged drug trade itself to the financial networks and assets suspected to be connected to it.
